Systems Design Specialist (Network Design Engineer Generalist)
Penn State is looking for an exceptional, experienced, enthusiastic individual to serve as a network design engineer generalist within the central Enterprise Network and Communication Services provider for Penn State’s multi-campus education and research environment. This is an opportunity to be part of an innovative team of network engineers and communication technology specialists, building and integrating large-scale, complex, communication systems/services, from the university enterprise network (including core, edge, and border, local- and wide-area, and datacenter and science DMZ) to advanced unified communications systems (including enterprise voice and video). Strategic thinking and planning acumen are critical skills for this position. This specialized lead will: Fulfill various roles, from data/process/product/service steward to project manager; work on complex assignments, and review progress and evaluate results; display competence in project management; develop design requirements for the deployment of network and communication systems; maintain current and correct documentation; develop design requirements for new solutions; develop prototypes of appropriate infrastructure, hardware, and associated systems; develop effective processes and procedures; evaluate potential equipment, components, and software; interface with vendors to resolve hardware and software problems; interface with University, national, and/or international organizations to resolve service related issues; help other units define and design server solutions for their environments; align project relevance to strategic direction; develop training programs for other staff; and provide technical guidance to other staff. This job will be filled as a level 3, or level 4, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 3. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. Bachelor's degree in computer science/engineering, electrical engineering, or information systems technology are preferred. Master's degree preferred. Data networking experience and subject-matter expertise in a large-scale, higher-education environment, including IPv6, strongly desired. Knowledge of /experience with IP-based communication systems (e.g., voice and video over IP, and unified communications), and specialized project management expertise, also strongly desired.
