The Pennsylvania State University’s Office of General Counsel (OGC) seeks to hire an Associate General Counsel as described in this posting who will be substantially dedicated to providing legal advice and support for Penn State Health and its affiliated entities, and the College of Medicine of the Pennsylvania State University. Penn State Health includes a 550 bed academic medical center (The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center) with approximately 900 faculty physicians, a community hospital located in Reading, PA (Saint Joseph Regional Health Network), and a variety of specialty health care facilities and physician practices. The principal location of Penn State Health is in Hershey, PA (90 miles from University Park, PA). The College of Medicine is located at and is a part of The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, in Hershey, PA. The College of Medicine includes eight basic science and 18 clinical departments, with over 900 students, including medical students, graduate students in masters and doctoral studies, and masters level physician assistant students. Over 600 residents and fellows participate in graduate medical education programs. This position will be permanently located at The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, with limited travel to University Park, PA, Reading, PA and other business locations of Penn State Health (primarily in south central Pennsylvania). There are currently three attorneys within Penn State’s OGC who are located in Hershey and who provide legal services to the health care enterprise and the College of Medicine. Areas of responsibility will include drafting, negotiating and managing contracts, including information technology contracts, compliance issues (e.g., Anti-Kickback Statute and Stark Law), and day-to-day legal advice to the health care enterprise and the College of Medicine. The successful candidate may also advise the University on the full range of issues that it faces, including legal issues related to compliance and risk management. This job will be filled as a level 3, or level 4, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a J.D. or L.L.B. from an ABA-accredited law school or higher plus five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 3. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. Qualifications for this position include: admission to the bar of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania or eligibility for prompt admission; progressive law firm or inside counsel experience in a health care environment. The successful candidate must demonstrate the highest level of integrity and professionalism, possess superior communication skills, have demonstrated ability to work in a collegial and professional manner with peers and clients, have a strong interest in working in the University’s OGC and have a strong interest in the work and mission of Penn State Health and the College of Medicine.
