Description

Working with teams under the general supervision of the Associate Head of Special Collections Library, and alongside Special Collections staff, the Collections Services Assistant (CSA) will provide support for the use and management of SCL collections. The Collections Services Assistant will assist onsite and remote researchers, retrieve and reshelve materials for researchers and staff, and work alongside staff in support of collections management projects. Specific job duties will include: Providing assistance to researchers through regularly scheduled Special Collections Reading Room desk shifts; retrieve and reshelve archival collections and rare books for researcher and staff use; support distance research by completing photoduplication requests on a demand-driven basis; assist with research for remote reference questions; use the library catalog and SCL`s unique systems to locate relevant collection material; manage the flow of materials in and out of the hold room and other onsite collection spaces; send notifications to researchers when materials are available in the reading room for their use; identify materials that may require rehousing, relabeling, or descriptive corrections; collaborate with members of the Collections Management Team to improve the housing and description of collections, including support for digital collections; assist with the moving of collections between storage spaces, including shelf reading, adding new box labels, and transporting of collection materials; support of other projects as assigned. Required: Exceptional organizational ability; customer service aptitude; strong communication skills` Sensitivity to and aptitude for handling rare and fragile materials; knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and Word; strong commitment to diversity, equity, respect and inclusion. Desired, but not necessary: Experience working in a library or other similar setting; familiarity with special collections material (archives, manuscripts, rare books, etc.); non-English language(s) proficiency. 10-20 hours/week - schedule will be determined by mutual agreement with supervisor.
