Description

The Pennsylvania State University seeks candidates for the position of Dean of the College of Nursing. Penn State is the land-grant University of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and is composed of the University Park campus and 24 other campuses throughout the state. Reporting directly to the Executive Vice President and Provost of the University, the Dean serves as the principal academic and administrative officer of the College. The College of Nursing is the newest college at Penn State having been named by the Board of Trustees in September of 2013. Although it is a new College, it has a 50 year history of excellence in the education of nursing students on which to build the future. The College of Nursing has four academic programs including the baccalaureate (first year admission and second degree), registered nurse to baccalaureate, master’s (academic and professional degrees), and doctoral programs (PhD and DNP) providing education to approximately 2,800 full-time undergraduate and graduate students on 13 campuses throughout the Commonwealth. The Penn State College of Nursing is the largest educator of pre-licensure students in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. There is a strong focus on distance education in both the RN to BSN program and in graduate education. According to U.S. News and World Report, the graduate program is ranked in the top 5% of nursing schools nationwide. An online doctor of nursing practice (DNP) program in nursing leadership is the first doctoral degree offered through the University’s World Campus. The College of Nursing is among the top schools of nursing in the country in NIH funding, with a 2016 17 operating budget for the College is $8.4 million and variety of robust programs of research in such areas as palliative and end-of-life care, geriatrics, dementia and delirium, child and adolescent health, as well as organizational change in complex systems. Established in 2007, the College is home to the Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence, one of seven centers of excellence selected and funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation. Interdisciplinary collaboration opportunities occur with the Colleges of Health and Human Development, Engineering, information Sciences and Technology, Education, Arts and Architecture and Medicine, as well as several academic centers within the University including the Child Maltreatment Solutions Network. In addition, the College of Nursing is a co-leader in the Penn State Clinical and Translational Science Institute. The position requires an individual who can lead effectively and manage one of the most cutting-edge, rapidly growing academic units in a multi-disciplinary and highly inter-disciplinary research university. The successful candidate will work closely with Commonwealth Campus academic administrators to oversee baccalaureate nursing programs at ten campuses. Prior leadership experience with responsibility for strategic management of personnel, programs, and resources is required, along with an ability to inspire students to expand their knowledge and understanding of their impact in a multicultural, global society. In addition, the successful candidate should have a commitment to high quality disciplinary and interdisciplinary education and research, as well as diversity; an interest in fundraising; and familiarity with national issues affecting graduate and undergraduate nursing education, with credentials appropriate for a tenured appointment at the rank of professor.
