Description

WPSU Penn State is seeking a Reporter/Producer/Writer experienced in covering local public affairs for radio broadcast and online distribution. The ideal candidate is an engaging storyteller with strong reporting and writing abilities and journalism experience, preferably in radio. The reporter must be comfortable producing high quality content on deadline for both radio and the web, and have cross-platform experience. The Reporter should have the skills necessary to work both independently and collaboratively. This position demands creativity in attaining hard-to-get sources and the ability to assess the newsworthiness of a story as well as its appeal to the listener/reader. The candidate must have a strong understanding of journalistic principles, ethics, and fairness. An understanding of public media’s unique role in American media and familiarity with the NPR style is required (though previous experience in public broadcasting is not). An understanding of database-based research and Hindenburg radio editing software is preferred. Candidate must be willing to work flexible hours. This job will be filled as a level 2, or level 3, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 2. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding. We seek candidates who are able to advance Outreach’s diversity initiative.
