The Student Farm at Penn State is a cross-institution initiative of the Sustainability Institute’s Sustainable Food Systems Program. 2017 is the Student Farm’s second year of operation on a one-acre site approximately two miles north of University Park campus. Production consists of ecological management of diversified vegetable, herb and fruit crops, grown by approximately six to eight paid and for-credit (primarily undergraduate) student interns, as well as Student Farm Club members and volunteers. The Student Farm is seeking a part-time Assistant Farm Manager to support farm production and sales. The Assistant Farm Manager, under supervision of the Sustainable Food Systems Program Manager, will be responsible for overseeing the Student Farm site as a space focused on experiential education, community gatherings and local foods production for campus. The assistant farm manager will work on the Student Farm as well as on campus. Hours are typically 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., Monday-Friday, with field meetings at 7:00 a.m. on Mondays and periodic planning meetings for a total of approximately 22 hours per week. Anticipated start date is early June, and anticipated end date is November 17, 2017. Assistant Farm Manager key responsibilities include: Team coordination and leadership: co-lead weekly intern meetings and direct student farm leaders on Student Farm tasks and responsibilities; train student leaders: train students in leadership skills and support their leadership in the program both on and beyond the farm via farm tours, class visits and community events; oversee farm facility development and maintenance: farm site maintenance may include tasks such as fence repair, equipment maintenance and high tunnel construction; support overall program development and dissemination: assist in development of new programming on the farm and via market partnerships, including experiential learning for University courses and interns; may host courses, student researchers, community groups, volunteers and others: provide workshops, discussion groups, tours and service learning experiences to farm visitors; evaluation: document relevant planning, production, sales and programmatic metrics and data; University vehicles: may include driving of University vehicles and certification to drive a 15-passenger van; Perform other related duties as necessary. Qualifications for the position: 2+ years farm management and sales experience on a diversified vegetable farm; experience teaching, training or offering technical assistance, especially in farm settings is a plus; highly organized and strong attention to detail; Self-directed and motivated; ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced work environment; excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills; ability to work in outdoor conditions that include heat, cold and rain; Pennsylvania Public Pesticide Applicator Certification or Public Registered Technician; own transportation to the Student Farm and throughout campus; ability to lift 50 pounds with or without accommodation; proficiency with word processing and spreadsheet software programs. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as part of your job duties.
