The Vehicle and Unmanned Systems Division (VUSD) of the Undersea Systems Office (USO) of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) is seeking a Department Head for the Mechanical Engineering Support (MES) Department. Duties and responsibilities of the position are described below, and qualified candidates are encouraged to apply. The mission of the MES Department is to provide engineering support for engineering staff to advance the research, design, development, and transition of the mechanical components and systems utilized in naval undersea weapons and other Department of Defense applications and to assist with laboratory testing during engineering development; assembly testing during the manufacturing/build process; and field testing during in-water test events. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Technical Leadership: Provide technical expertise and direction through the development of outstanding technical capabilities within the MES Department and ensure MES Department personnel adhere to the highest standards of technical work; Programmatic Leadership: Demonstrate capability and willingness to serve as a Principal Investigator (PI) on Office and ARL programs and identify/pursue new business opportunities as appropriate; Resource Management: Work closely with leadership team for all USO programs, as well as with PM/PI’s of other ARL programs as applicable and properly plan, staff, and execute those programs and ensure all departmental personnel are appropriately and sufficiently tasked at all times; and Personnel Management: Define performance expectations, identify professional development and training opportunities, and evaluate professional growth through performance reviews, recruit, retain, and develop top notch technical staff, and lead, advise, encourage, and facilitate personnel to create and explore innovative technologies This job will be filled as a level 3, or level 4, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 3. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering Technology is desired. Strong candidates should possess technology and application knowledge to include: 3D CAD design with software such as NX and engineering drawing development; modern mechanical instrumentation and measurement techniques; mechanical tooling and machining maintenance and use; manufacturing; and development of system test plans and processes. Experience managing programs and people, and a demonstrated capability to set and meet goals and objectives, is required. Effective oral and written communication and presentation skills are also required. Candidates selected will be subject to a government security investigation. You must be a U.S. citizen to apply.
