The Department of Public Health Sciences is recruiting for 3 positions which have similar responsibilities but each is focused upon a different population, specifically the African-American, Latino and rural populations of central Pennsylvania. The person in this position will be responsible for expanding the initiatives of the Community Sciences and Health Outcomes (CSHO) Core of the Penn State Cancer Institute. These activities will include expansion of the Community Health Worker (CHW) program for the Penn State Cancer Institute. Established in 2010, the CHW program seeks to reduce the burden of cancer among minority and medically underserved populations in central Pennsylvania through the implementation of peer-led evidence-based strategies, including early detection and prevention of cancer. The incumbent will recruit and train lay members to be CHWs, with a particular focus upon three specific communities. The incumbent will participate in weekly team meetings and prepare reports describing CHW and related activities. The person in this position must be a trusted member of the specific community with demonstrated ability to lead, train, and supervise peers. This is a seasonal part-time position funded through June 30, 2017. Training and experience: Master’s degree in biology, health, or social sciences with 2 years’ related experience or Bachelor’s degree in biology, health, or sciences and 4 years of experience or 10 years of experience in community-based cancer prevention and control.
