Upward Bound/Upward Bound Migrant/Upward Bound Math and Science (UB/UBM/UBMS) is seeking Instructors for the 2017 Summer STEM Academy for Creative Studies, which will be held June 12 – July 11, 2018. Responsibilities include teaching 5 weeks of specific content area instruction, promotion of effective learning skills, and mentoring. Instructors are encouraged to use inquiry-based teaching methods, field trips, hands-on activities, and other creative means to support their lessons. An interest in incorporating a Social Justice theme into curriculum is highly desired. Class size will be 8 -10 high school students. Instructors are needed in the following content areas: Critical Reading and Writing – 12 sections, 8 hours/week/class; Math – 12 sections total, including Algebra 2, Trig/Pre-Calc, Calculus – 4 hours/week/class; Science with a Lab – 12 sections total, including variations on Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, Physics; and College Prep – for HS Seniors, HS Juniors, HS Sophomores – 4 hours/week/class. Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree with relevant teaching experience or be a current Penn State student majoring in Education who has successfully completed 91 credits of collegiate instruction. Applicants should possess excellent written/oral communication skills, and must be committed to helping underrepresented students realize their potential. Familiarity with UB/UBM/UBMS programs and/or TRIO program affiliation is highly desired, but not required. UB/UBM/UBMS is a federally funded program at Penn State that prepares low-income, first generation high school students for future success in college. The UB/UBM/UBMS Summer STEM Academy for Creative Studies hosts 75-80 students at the University Park campus during a six-week residential camp that offers a taste of college life as well as assistance with academic courses.
