The Animal Resource Program (ARP), Pell Laboratory for Advanced Biological Research seeks a motivated, responsible, people-oriented individual to assist with the day-to-day operations and research support activities at Penn State’s Animal Biosafety Level 3 (ABSL-3) Laboratory. Duties will include: Coordination, setup, and clean up for research projects; Collecting data and supporting research projects of multiple investigators; assisting manager with select agent access control; coordinating training and managing training documentation; coordinating and performing animal handling, husbandry, monitoring, and supportive care with scientific staff and animal caretakers; coordinating animal receiving, census tracking, and health observations/surveillance; completing regular facility operations rounds; coordinating service contracts and scheduling with outside vendors; performing cleaning, maintenance, and repair of facility and equipment; maintaining supply inventory, ordering, and record keeping; maintaining electronic data entries and facility records; coordinating OPP maintenance and repair procedures within the facility’s laboratory and mechanical spaces. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Candidates should have a degree in science or equivalent related work experience in infectious disease research, microbiology, virology, or related fields. Successful candidates will have good communication and computer skills; have the ability to work with biohazardous materials; be medically fit to wear a respirator; be able to lift 50 pounds with or without accommodation; have a valid driver’s license. The ideal candidate will be confident in his or her ability to work in an ABSL-3 containment facility and will have knowledge of ABSL-3 regulations and basic GLP requirements. Hands-on laboratory experience is preferred. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as part of your job duties. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a DOJ/FBI Security Risk Assessment for access to biological select agents and toxins. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding.
