Description

The scholarship and teaching of BBH faculty focuses on how biological, behavioral, psychological, sociocultural, and environmental variables interact to influence health. Departmental research examines substantive areas in which biology and behavior are inextricably interconnected such as stress, mental health, and sleep, chronic diseases such as addiction, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, as well as pertinent areas of scholarship that provide important windows into those aspects of health such as ethics, genetics and epigenetics, neuroscience, prevention science, health disparities, public health and translational science. Department faculty are highly research active, transdisciplinary, and collaborative; see http://bbh.hhd.psu.edu/. This position will build on the growing strength of the department’s biobehavioral health research expertise and promote and enhance a vibrant, rigorous, and interdisciplinary research, teaching, and learning environment. The successful candidate must have a research program examining biobehavioral health-relevant processes, contexts and/or outcomes, including a consideration of how sex and or gender might moderate health and related processes. We particularly welcome applicants with highly integrative techniques that utilize a range of biological, psychosocial, and behavioral data and/or methods (e.g., neuroimaging/fMRI, genetics, endocrinology/immunology, or behavioral neuroscience). Areas of interest germane to health that are likely to promote and enhance collaborative interdisciplinary research within the department will also be viewed as a strength. The responsibilities of this tenure-track position are to establish or continue a fundable line of interdisciplinary biobehavioral health research, teach graduate and undergraduate courses, supervise and mentor student researchers, and provide service to the Department, College, and University. Applicants should have a strong record of scholarly, programmatic, health-related research commensurate with their experience, and show excellent potential to establish external research funding. A doctorate in neuroscience, social and behavioral science, biology, psychology, sociology, public health, or a related field is required. Opportunity exists for the candidate to affiliate with institutes at Penn State such as the Social Science Research Institute, the Huck Institutes for the Life Sciences and the Penn State Cancer Institute. Applications from members of underrepresented groups including women and ethnic minorities are encouraged. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Applications received by January 6, 2017 will be given full consideration. The expected start date is August 2017. Questions about this position may be directed to the search committee chair, Orfeu Buxton, at BBHfacultysearch@psu.edu. To apply, applicants must complete an online application including a cover letter describing research and teaching interests and experiences, curriculum vitae, the names of three professional references who will be providing letters, and 2-3 reprints or preprints that convey research interests and expertise.
