The Penn State Breazeale Reactor (PSBR), Radiation Science and Engineering Center (RSEC)


The Penn State Breazeale Reactor (PSBR), Radiation Science and Engineering Center (RSEC) invite applications for the position of Associate Director for Operations. The successful applicant will be responsible for safe and efficient management and supervision of daily PSBR operations and maintenance; scheduling of operations and operators; operator qualification and training; reactor records and material accountability; emergency preparedness; support of education, research, and service missions; and active support and encouragement of a positive and effective safety culture. Reports to the Director of the RSEC and is the supervisor for most of the RSEC operations staff. The RSEC is a research center in the College of Engineering of the Pennsylvania State University that provides education, research and irradiation services, technical advice to the Pennsylvania State University, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the USA and worldwide. The RSEC has received approximately $14 million funds from Penn State and federal agencies for infrastructure improvements since 2008. The position requires an advanced degree, or equivalent experience, in nuclear engineering or a related discipline with at least 12 years of experience in reactor operations and safety management. A prior NRC operator’s license, equivalent certification, or equivalent experience is a requirement. A NRC senior operation’s license for the PSBR must be acquired within one year of appointment and continually maintained thereafter. Appointment is contingent on meeting the physical and psychological requirements of ANSI/ANS-15.4, 1988 (or later versions). The appointment is also contingent on meeting and maintaining all conditions for unescorted access authorization to the PSBR. US Citizenship required. The position rank and pay will be based on the applicant’s applicable experience and education. When the individual’s credentials and interest warrant, consideration will be given to having an affiliate appointment in the Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering (MNE) department.
