Description

The Institute for CyberScience (ICS) seeks a High Performance Computing Engineer for our infrastructure team. This person will be an integral contributor to a fast-paced and growing team of specialists supported by an exciting $45 million Penn State investment in research cyberinfrastructure. Penn State’s elite researchers use our high-performance research cloud to solve real-world problems by conducting simulations, data mining, and other high-performance computing operations. With ICS, you will have the opportunity to support this ground-breaking work. As our High Performance Computing Engineer, you will: design, develop, and implement solutions for large-scale high-performance research cloud projects through your expertise and knowledge of complex computational system components, insuring that solutions meet the dependency requirements of hardware and software to support research. This job will be filled as a level 2, or level 3, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 2. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. Our desired qualifications include: understanding of computing systems, hardware, software, and networks, preferably in a research environment; experience with Linux operating systems, preferably in a large-scale, multi-user environment; scripting in languages such as Python and bash; and an understanding of virtualization technologies and concepts (e.g. VMWare). Experience with the following is a plus: Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL); resource managers and schedulers (e.g. Moab/Torque); and automated configuration management software (e.g. Puppet/Chef).
