The Institute for CyberScience (ICS) seeks a High Performance Computing Operations Engineer for our operations team. This person will be an integral contributor to a fast-paced and growing team of specialists supported by an exciting $45 million Penn State investment in research cyberinfrastructure. Penn State’s elite researchers use our high-performance research cloud to solve real-world problems by conducting simulations, data mining, and other high-performance computing operations. With ICS, you will have the opportunity to support this ground-breaking work. As our High Performance Computing Operations Engineer, you will: design, develop, and implement engineered systems to enhance our high-performance research cloud operations; investigate problems and lead innovative solution approaches that provide information and guidance to users to enhance their utilization of our high-performance research cloud resources. This job will be filled as a level 2, or level 3, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 2. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. Our desired qualifications include: understanding of computing systems, hardware, software, and networks, preferably in a research environment; experience with Linux operating systems, preferably in a large-scale, multi-user environment; understanding of system monitoring tools (e.g. Nagios and SolarWinds); and experience with maintaining a distributed Windows computing infrastructure. Experience with the following is a plus: Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL); and resource managers and schedulers (e.g. Moab/Torque).
