The Department of Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology (PPEM), College of Agricultural Sciences, The Pennsylvania State University seeks a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor with a 75% research and 25% extension appointment. The successful applicant is expected to develop an externally funded research program on the epidemiology of diseases of field crops with national and international impact. We are seeking a candidate adept at creating and evaluating cutting edge epidemiological models and implementing them in novel integrated disease management strategies to carry on the legacy of excellence in epidemiology in PPEM. Research focusing on the integrated roles of biotic and abiotic factors in disease systems allows the successful candidate to collaborate with colleagues in PPEM as well as other programs on campus, including the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics, Ecosystem Science and Management, and Meteorology. The candidate is encouraged to pursue an issue-driven research program focused on regional as well as national and international emerging diseases. Areas that may be productive include studies of factors affecting resiliency in the face of climate change and other microbial issues including mycotoxins associated with field crops. Collaboration with members of the statewide Field and Forage Crops Extension Team for knowledge dissemination and outreach is expected. Resident instructional responsibilities will consist of teaching one 3-credit graduate level epidemiology course every second year. Candidates will be evaluated on their potential for publishing high impact research, creatively disseminating information through extension programs, obtaining extramural funding, teaching excellence, potential for mentoring MS and PhD students, and collaboration in research, extension and teaching. A Ph.D. in plant pathology (or related field) and a record of research independence and success in plant disease epidemiology is required; corresponding postdoctoral experience is preferred. Applicants should provide evidence of strong potential for conducting and publishing research, securing competitive for external research funding, excellence in research methods, dedication to teaching, and strong interest and skills to mentor and advise graduate students. Interest in and ability to contribute to interdisciplinary research collaborations in one or more areas central to the College of Agricultural Sciences strategic plan, including sustainability, advanced agricultural systems, integrated health solutions, entrepreneurship, and environmental resilience, is expected. An ability to engage professionally with faculty, staff, students, and clientele from diverse populations is required. Salary will be competitive, commensurate with background and experience.
