HPC Engineer for Advanced CyberInfrastructure
The Institute for CyberScience (ICS) seeks a talented and goal-oriented individual to join our team as a HPC Engineer with strong expertise in complex advanced cyberinfrastructure (ACI). The ICS provides a high performance computational infrastructure (hardware, software, storage, communications, and networking), expertise, and advanced research computing capabilities including modeling and simulation, data integration, management, analysis and visualization to foster innovation, collaboration, and increase scholarly productivity across all areas of research university-wide. We are looking for someone who loves doing the type of work required for this position to be part of our ACI team. In this role, you will work on large ACI compute projects. For these projects, you will: design, develop and implement project solutions that meet or exceed project requirements through the knowledge of major complex computational systems understanding the hardware and software relationships that support research; and work with ACI staff (including SW Engineers, CI Architects/Engineers, and Applications Specialists) to insure that solutions meet the dependency requirements of hardware and software to support research. In addition, you will support our large ACI. For this support, you will: provide innovative problem solving approaches to software and/or hardware problems; develop and execute resolution plans by working with ACI staff, peer networks and vendor interfaces; use continuous integration practices to deploy and utilize tools to provide and automate end to end delivery of software and configuration services onto ACI. Finally, you will work on projects that enhance or extend technical methodology or content through expansion of existing or development of new efforts; contribute to intellectual development activities. This job will be filled as a level 2, or level 3, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 2. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. Candidates will need to demonstrate an understanding of computing systems, hardware, software and network, preferably in a research environment; Experience with Linux operating systems, preferably in a large-scale, multi-user environment; understanding of system monitoring tools (e.g. Nagios); scripting in languages such as Python and bash; experience with network based services (e.g. DNS); understanding of virtualization technologies and concepts (e.g. VMware). The following skills are not requirements of a successful applicant, but candidates with these skills are strongly encouraged to apply: Knowledge of complex ACI including: high-speed networks such as Infiniband; multiple storage platforms, such as GPFS and NAS; cloud computing platforms, such as OpenStack; experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux - Certifications are a plus; experience with cluster resource managers and schedulers (e.g. Moab/Torque); experience with automated configuration management software (e.g. Puppet/Chef); experience with deploying and maintaining a distributed Windows computing infrastructure. The successful candidate will have a record of successfully completing projects with on-time deliverables within budget , the ability to deliver on tasking independently and in a team, and impeccable ethics and integrity with a Strong work ethic.
