Description

The Department of Food Science at The Pennsylvania State University is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor with an interest in studies at the food-microbiome interface to develop a strong, externally-funded research program that is consistent with the Department’s focus on Foods for Human Health. Potential areas of research interest include, but are not limited to, the influence of diet on the gut microbiome; microbe-microbe and/or microbe-host interactions or; development of strategies to enhance beneficial or inhibit pathogenic groups of microorganisms. Overlapping interests in the Food Science Department include the impact of food, bioactive compounds, and probiotics on gut health, microbial pathogenesis, and microbial consortia within foods and food processing facilities. The successful candidate would be expected to contribute to one or more of these areas, as well as develop appropriate collaborations, across the College of Agricultural Sciences and beyond. Potential collaborators include: the Department of Nutritional Sciences, the Interdisciplinary Program in Bioinformatics and Genomics, the Genome Sciences Institute, the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences, The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, the Center for Molecular Immunology and Infectious Diseases and the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics. Penn State has excellent core facilities including those in Genomics, Proteomics and Mass Spectrometry, and Metabolomics. Teaching responsibilities include: an advanced Food Microbiology course that would be attractive to undergraduate students across the College of Agricultural Sciences; development of graduate level course(s) in hands-on data analyses, such as metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, or comparative genomics. Such courses could be traditional graduate-level offerings, taught as summer short courses, and/or developed in collaboration with faculty who offer on-line bioinformatics courses through Penn State’s World Campus; supervise graduate students in thesis research projects and advise undergraduate students. Qualifications for the position include: Ph.D. in food science, microbiology or related field, with a strong background in modern methods of microbial ecology research; postdoctoral experience in the area of microbial ecology as it relates to Foods for Human Health; and willingness to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
