Two (2) Assistant positions are available in the laboratory of Tracy Langkilde ( at The Pennsylvania State University. Each Assistant will work directly under Christopher Howey (postdoc leading the project; and will assist with an ongoing project investigating the effects of prescribed fire on timber rattlesnakes (Crotalus horridus) and vernal pool amphibians. The main responsibilities of the position will be to assist in the capture and processing of timber rattlesnakes, the radio telemetry of timber rattlesnakes, the collection of habitat use and habitat availability data, processing of operative temperature data, measurement of preferred body temperature data, and the surveying of vernal pools for presence of amphibians. The Assistant will also be required to lead a team within the field; and thus, applicants should provide evidence of leadership and team-working skills. It is highly encouraged that applicants have previous experience with venomous snakes, radio telemetry, and identifying reptiles and amphibians. Knowledge of native plant species is preferred, but not required. Applicants should be in great physical condition and be able to hike 8-10 miles a day in various weather conditions with about 10 pounds of gear, and should be tolerant and knowledgeable about ticks and other biting insects. Qualified applicants will be able to navigate using only a compass and topographic map but also know how to operate a GPS device. Applicants must hold at least a B.S. degree in Biology or a related field. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as part of your job duties. A valid driver`s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks. This is a fixed-term II appointment (without benefits), initially funded for four months from date of hire, with extension possible for another one to two months depending on need.
