The University Library is looking for exceptional students to serve as GIS interns (2) with the Social Science and Donald W. Hamer Maps Libraries. Interns will work closely with the GIS Specialist and Geospatial Services Librarian to gain practical knowledge and skills to further geospatial initiatives of the University Libraries. The University Libraries is developing a process and project on working with digital Sanborn maps to georeference them, extract building and feature information from them, and create a meaningful way for patrons to discovery this enhanced information. Intern activities include: georeferencing historic Sanborn maps from the Penn State Maps collection for a select area of Pennsylvania; contributing to the research process of techniques and methods for the Sanborn project; enhancing this historic Sanborn project through connections with other Penn State Collections, both in digital and print format. Desired skills and experience: junior or senior in good academic standing; advanced training (e.g. coursework) and/or experience with at least one GIS software; understanding of georeferencing process from coursework or other setting; desire and ability to work in a collaborative environment; ability to work independently on assigned tasks; a desire to learn about geospatial initiatives within the University Libraries. These interns can work up to 40 hours/week. The intern may, at his or her discretion, apply for academic credit through his or her department.
